“Any plans for the holiday?” I asked my client as I rubbed oil down her back. Yes, it was close to Christmas, but that’s why the people who hired me loved me. I worked when others wouldn’t.

“Just the usual. Rick has this grand idea that we’ll go out for a fancy dinner tonight, but I don’t want all that. I think a nice evening in cuddling by the fire sounds great.”

A moan slipped from her lips before she continued, “What about you?”

“I’m not sure.”

Mindi’s head lifted from the table and looked over at me. “What do you mean you aren’t sure? Christmas is a few days away.”

It was hard to explain that in a matter of days I’d gone from single to very much attached, and I didn’t know if Quinten and I would spend time together or not. I wasn’t sure how to bring it up with him. Anytime I thought about having a conversation with him, we ended up having sex instead. Don’t get me wrong. I’d rather have sex, but now I wondered what that might mean for us and the holidays.

“Come on, Jo, tell your good friend Mindi all about it.”

I pushed deep into a knot in her lower back, and Mindi groaned. “God your hands are amazing. If I were attracted to women, I’d snatch you up in a heartbeat.”

I smiled to myself, knowing I’d derailed her thoughts. If I could keep it up, I wouldn’t have to tell her anything about what was going on in my life.

“Don’t think I forgot about this little conversation we were having. Plans, you, spill.”

I thought for a second and then said, “I’m in a very new relationship. That’s all.” That should be generic enough.

“Oh, you’re seeing someone? I’m so happy for you.”

I was happy for me too. It had been a long time since I’d felt the way I did about a man. How he wanted to protect me and stand up for me would normally be a turn-off, but with Quinten, it seemed right.

I finished up with Mindi, wished her well, and for the first time in forever, I couldn’t wait to get home. Quinten was waiting for me, and we were going out. I needed to pick up a gift for my dad. What could I say? He also passed down his procrastination to me.

When I pulled into the drive, I noticed Quinten wasn’t there. He had told me he would wait for me. I wasn’t the type of girl who got all clingy, but knowing he wasn’t on the other side of the door made me feel a little sad. All morning he’d been talking about how he couldn’t wait for us to go out, and now that we could, he wasn’t around for me.

Just as well. I needed a shower. So by the time I was finished, I hoped he’d be back and ready. I had probably mentioned I would need time, and he was giving me space. Pulling up in the drive, I got out, locked my car, and unlocked the front door.
